I hope you enjoy these articles I found on my journey around the web this week. Have a great weekend and Happy Independence Day to all of our American friends!

Happiness Tip: Practice Random Acts of Kindness – Abundance Blog at Marelisa Online

In “The Healing Power of Doing Good”, Allan Luks reports that there’s a phenomenon called the helper’s high, which is described as a feeling of warmth and increased energy, as well as a feeling of euphoria, that people feel when they’re being kind to others. In addition, a 2005 study from Hebrew University in Israel found a link between kindness and the release of dopamine, a feel-good neurotransmitter in the brain.

http://almostfrugal.com/2009/06/29/spend-less/

The Psychology of Cash Management: How Large Bills Can Help You Spend Less – Almost Frugal

Small bills are very convenient to carry around. After all, they do make it easy to pay in exact change. But according to a recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research, carrying small bills can actually cause you to spend more on impulse than you otherwise would.

This phenomenon is called the “denomination effect,” and has a lot to do with the ease of making a purchase. For example, let’s say that I walk into a souvenir shop and see a baseball cap I just have to buy. After tax, the cost of the cap comes to exactly $13.00. If I had exact change (say a ten and three ones), it would be very easy for me to complete the transaction. However, if I were only carrying twenty dollar bills, then the transaction becomes a bit of a hassle. I’d have to break a crisp new twenty, and then count my change. Psychologically, breaking a large bill makes it seem like I’m spending more, thus increasing the probability that I’d reconsider the impulse buy.

http://happylotus.com/2009/07/03/the-detachment-myth/

The Detachment Myth – Happy Lotus

When I first began my spiritual journey, I read many books or passages in books that dealt with the concept of being detached. Usually, I felt extreme resistance to the concept of detachment. It sounded too cold and too mean.

Often, I saw passages that would warn against becoming too attached to your loved ones because eventually, you or they will die. There are many books that talk about controlling your emotions as well.

http://www.marcandangel.com/2009/06/29/how-to-make-today-memorable/

How To Make Today Memorable – Marc and Angel Hack Life

Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is just a figment of the imagination. So if you think about it, today is the only day you’re alive. Today is the day that matters the most.

Here’s how to make it memorable:

Try something totally new. – Variety truly is the spice of life. You can see or do something a million times, but you can only see or do it for the first time once. As a result, first time experiences usually leave a reflective mark in our minds for the rest of our lives. So spice it up!

Entertain yourself with real-world experiences. – Great memories are the product of interesting life experiences. So turn off the television (or the computer) and get outdoors. Interact with the world, appreciate nature, take notice of the simple pleasures life has to offer, and just watch as life unfolds in front of you.

http://www.quantumlearning.pl/they-did-we-did-i-did

They did, we did … I did – Quantum Learning

Conspiracy theories seem to be quite popular these days – ranging across the spectrum from religion, politics through to historical events. If this interests you (and you have 2 hours to spare!) then the film ‘Zeitgeist’ might appeal (see the end of this article for the embedded video).

Personally I don’t need conspiracy theories or elite underworlds to explain the state of the world. I also don’t need alien or divine intervention to explain it.

We did it ourselves!

Rope Jumping As a Form of Exercise – dietriffic

How would you like a piece of exercise equipment, which sells for less than $20, can fit into any bag, the whole family can use it, it’s fun, and it improves your cardiovascular fitness while toning muscle all at the same time?

What is it? A jump rope of course!

What I love about skipping is you can burn an amazing amount of calories in just 15 to 20 minutes. Depending on how fast you jump, you could potentially burn off 5 to 15 calories per minute.

However, with nearly 5 inches of rain expected today and tomorrow we’ve decided to postpone it for a couple of weekends. Instead we are going to get creative and finish up the side rails on the deck and stairs…how exciting!

If you too are having a soggy weekend and find yourself sitting at the computer be sure to check out these great reads I came across this week. Have a good one all!

The Hidden Secret to Genuine Happiness – Happy Lotus

In one of my previous posts, I shared the fact that there were 4,000 books published on the topic of happiness in 2008. Happiness is something that so many people want to have in their life. Call it optimism, joy, bliss or whatever floats your boat; people want to feel good about themselves and life.

I was five when I decided that I wanted to be happy. I remember the day as if it were yesterday. I was walking home from school, fed up with having to go there every day. My family was the first ethnic family to move into the neighborhood and my name was extremely unusual. Kids made fun of me and it was constant. I came home from school every day in tears. It is hard to be a kid, even harder when you are the sole ethnic one in your neighborhood.

Did you know that being nice to others can actually be good for you? My mother always chided me to be nice. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. After all, we all get grumpy from time-to-time and take it out on those around us.

We can see that being nice to others is good for them, but did you know it is in your best interest too? Recognizing the personal benefits of being nice might motivate us to do it a little more often like when that person cuts us off in traffic.

The Right Kind of Action – Someday Syndrome

Someday Lesson: Curing Someday Syndrome requires not only action, but the correct set of actions. In one of my many past work-lives (yes, I’m a typical artist with a million different jobs on my resume) I was a website usability specialist. I would review and design sites based on how they looked, how well people could find information and how readable that information was. When I was a Professional Organizer, I would periodically go through the websites of my fellow Canadian Organizers and rate them, giving them grades from A through F. The majority of these sites received a D or lower.

http://www.onsimplicity.net/2009/06/toxic-friends-and-how-to-dump-them/

Toxic Friends and How to Dump Them – On Simplicity

I think just about every person in the world has had a toxic friend in their life at one point or another. There’s no blueprint of toxicity and no warning signs to steer us clear of these folks. (That’s unfortunate…) There are some common patterns that emerge in a toxic friendship: An unequal expectation of how much each person is supposed to give to the relationship

A person who claims “star status” in the friendship

A lack of flexibility and room to grow

Any of these sound uncomfortably familiar? It may be time for some distance if you’ve got relationships with “toxic” written all over them.

The July 1, 2009 edition of Bottom Line Personal, one of my favorite publications, included an excellent column on car maintenance tips. Columnist Eric Peters, author of Automotive Atrocities! The Cars We Love to Hate, shares his tips for maintaining cars and extending their useful life. As the owner of a 19 year-old vehicle, I appreciated the tips, and wondered if my vehicle would be in better shape had I read this several years ago when I first started driving it.

1. Keep your battery charged. This is especially important if you don’t drive your car that often. If you plan to let a vehicle sit for more than a couple weeks, you should invest in a “trickle charger,” or battery tender, which plugs into a regular household outlet and keeps your battery fully charged, automatically. I have a battery tender for my lawn tractor battery for winter months, and it guarantees a strong start in the spring.

The Hidden Secret to Genuine Happiness

I think just about every person in the world has had a toxic friend in their life at one point or another. There’s no blueprint of toxicity and no warning signs to steer us clear of these folks. (That’s unfortunate…) There are some common patterns that emerge in a toxic friendship: An unequal expectation of how much each person is supposed to give to the relationship:

A person who claims “star status” in the friendship

A lack of flexibility and room to grow

Any of these sound uncomfortably familiar? It may be time for some distance if you’ve got relationships with “toxic” written all over them.

Productivity has long since moved on from being about to-do lists and GTD to being almost a way of living. Basically, it’s about being organized, systematic and efficient in what you do and how you live, whether that be with coping when you feel down or – in the case of this post – learning from and resolving mistakes. I’ve often found that I learn more from getting something wrong than from anything a textbook or a bunch of lectures can give me. So why not apply a productive mindset to the experience and make the most of it? Below I’ve detailed my five steps to dealing with mistakes the productive way. Love to read your thoughts on this one!

Does your employer ask too much of you?

Recognition, raises and promotions are highly overrated. People that get these things are suck-ups and have sold their soul to the man. They seem happy, but I bet deep down inside they are miserable creatures that loathe all the attention they get at work.

What’s more, none of us wants to be married to our jobs anyway. Is having a steady job really all that important?!? Jobs are a dime a dozen. Sometimes you just don’t fit it and besides I can draw unemployment for a nice long time right now. Who needs a job? Who wants to be a workaholic?

Social Media for the Socially Inept – Simple Marriage

I don’t know about you, but the moment I walk into a crowded room, my palms start to sweat. I search the room for a familiar face. Thoughts crowd my brain: What if I don’t know anyone? Who will I talk to? I don’t think these people like me! Why did I come here anyway? I’m such a dork! They’re all looking at me and thinking, “I can’t believe SHE came HERE.”

Once a wallflower, always a wallflower, right?

Not necessarily. Socially inept people like me have a much easier time being social on the Internet. We don’t have to wait for those pauses in a conversation that never seem to come at the right moment. We don’t get all hung up on body language and facial expressions because we can’t see them.

3 Ways to Break Procrastination’s Hold Over Us - Someday Syndrome

In the cult of productivity, procrastination tops the list of deadly sins – it’s the Satan of the getting things done world. We search for hacks to avoid putting off tasks, we beat ourselves up for not getting it all done now, and we talk incessantly about just doing it.

We raise procrastination up to the level of insurmountable barrier so that it becomes more of a character flaw than anything we have control over. Just as many people turn their goals into unachievable visions by putting them up on pedestals and worshipping them, an equal number of people (or more!) put procrastination up on a negative pillar and quake under the weight of its gaze.

27 Last Minute Considerations Before Moving Across The World - Man vs. Debt

As many of you know, we are now under 72 hours away from our moving from Indianapolis to Cairns, Australia. Right now, I can honestly say that it doesn’t feel real. It certainly hasn’t sunk in. Yet with each ticking hour comes more and more things we are trying to finalize before leaving.

The following list isn’t meant to be exhaustive. Actually, it’s just the opposite. It’s a hodgepodge of random things we have gone through and are going through in this last week. Once you’ve read the list, please take the time to add anything that you feel we not have considered. I’m hoping that several of you more experienced travelers can help us avoid some unnecessary headaches!

I hope you’ve all had a fabulous week and are excited about the weekend! After a dump run this morning (tons of yard waste ) Gwynn and I will be taking the kids to my sister’s place for a BBQ and bonfire with the family. It should be a good time. To keep you busy if you’re choosing to stay indoors this weekend here are a few good reads that I’ve come across this week. I hope you enjoy!

But first, a few things to note from this week:

We had a guest post over at Simple Mom called Family Traditions: 10 Ideas To Get You Started! So be sure to check it out if you missed it.

I was fortunate enough to be randomly selected by Megan at Simple Kids to receive her families favorite unsung children’s book “Carry Me” by Rosemary Wells. I know our boys will love it so I’m looking forward to receiving it.

This week Gwynn implemented a few changes I had for the site. We’re really happy with how it turned out, it’s a little more pulled together and dare I say a bit more stylish? A huge thanks to my hubby for getting it done

And now…my favorite finds of the week

50 Bad Money Habits That Will Leave You Eating ALPO For Dinner – My Super Charged Life

How well do you handle your finances? Most of us have some bad money habits that continued could leave us eating ALPO for dinner! If not literally, then certainly figuratively. Dogs might love ALPO and we might survive eating it, but it won’t be pleasant. Shape up or you could wind up broke and desperate! Check out this list to see if you have any bad money habits that you need to break!

The friendship-details. – The Creative Mama

The topic of friendship has been on my mind a lot lately, and we’ve had some great discussion amongst readers on the subject. Day to day life can be exhausting, whether you work or stay at home. There are appointments to be made, meetings to attend, deadlines to be met. Sometimes just getting through a busy week is enough to send any of us into a tailspin!

How you ask, are we to keep up with the the smallest details?

Beating Exercise Apathy - This Improved Life

Doing the same exercise day in day out can have a negative impact on your whole fitness regime, and in some cases can be the reason that they fail. How many times have you heard or even thought yourself ‘oh I can’t be bothered today, it is so boring just jogging along for 30 minutes’. I know I have thought this, and I have to really give myself a kick up the behind to get going again. This is when you know exercise apathy has set in. But fear not, there are some simple ways to beat it. But firstly, watch out for:-

How to Let Go and Forgive - Zen Habits

We’ve all been hurt by another person at some time or another — we were treated badly, trust was broken, hearts were hurt. And while this pain is normal, sometimes that pain lingers for too long. We relive the pain over and over, and have a hard time letting go.

This causes problems. It not only causes us to be unhappy, but can strain or ruin relationships, distract us from work and family and other important things, make us reluctant to open up to new things and people. We get trapped in a cycle of anger and hurt, and miss out on the beauty of life as it happens.

What Do I Do When My Spouse And I Aren’t On The Same Page? – Simple Mom

Before you read any further – the foundation for this post is that marriage is designed as a place to grow up. If you don’t agree with this idea, it’s probably best if you head on to the other blogs in your reader.

If you are a regular reader of blogs like Simple Mom or Zen Habits, or even Simple Marriage (sorry, shameless plug), then it’s likely you are interested in ways to simplify or improve life, family, marriage, and work.

Amanda has done a very thorough job and there are even printable checklists…awesome!)

While vacations should be fun, exciting and memorable times for you and your family, they can be stressful if you have not planned well and budgeted in advance.Deciding where to go is the first step to any great vacation.Although you may have a few ideas in mind of where you would like to go, here are some things to think about before you make your final decision.

The Spring Cleaning Party starts this Monday, and I hope you’re all as ready as I am to start the spring cleaning process in your home! Decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your living space will not only freshen up your home, it will lift your spirits and get you motivated to live more simply and fully. Here’s the general process of how this will work.

Are There Phases of Personal Development? – On Simplicity (Sara takes us through the stages of personal development. I hadn’t specifically broken my personal development journey down this way but it totally makes sense. Have a read and see if your journey is following a similar pattern?)

JD Roth has written (quite effectively) on the different stages of personal finance that we all seem to go through. I can’t help but wonder if there’s any correlation with personal development. Do we all go through phases or levels as we strive to reach personal development goals? If we do, what would they look like?

He also provides some suggestions on how to establish connections with people and carry on a conversation, without it being about the weather.)

Six years ago, when I lived in a snowy mountain village and paid my bills by cleaning high-end sinks and toilets, someone said something that prompted me to confront an uncomfortable truth about myself. A well-meaning coworker mentioned that she had been talking to another housekeeper about me. Oh? “She said, ‘David is a such great guy to work with, it’s just that he’s just so quiet.‘” I don’t remember how I responded, but I assume I tried to disagree somehow, and went back to my work hoping nobody would ever say that to me again. Quiet. As if I have nothing to say. I remember the rest of that day. As I scrubbed luxury-suite shower stalls, I played out an imaginary rebuttal in my head:

One Year of Love - Porsidan (This is a truly inspiring story of how Jay made significant lifestyle changes, dropped nearly 100 pounds and turned his health around.)

So, I’m guessing that when you saw the title of this post, you thought it was going to be a relationship post. It is, in a way, but not like you might expect. This is a post about a year of self-love. No, not that kind of self love! I’m talking about the kind of self love where you take a good hard look at yourself, realize that something isn’t working, and so you change it. Specifically, this is about how I’ve lost nearly 100 pounds in the past year. In April of 2008, I went to the doctor for the first time in several, several years. I hate going to the doctor, and will avoid it at all costs. Unfortunately, it almost cost me my life.

My favorite is #3 on her list Play music at home and dance around the lounge room.)

I’m organizing a 5th birthday party for Bunny right now. It’s going to have 40 people or so and a jumping castle and we’re taking over my father’s property, which has the room to host large gatherings. I had my wedding reception there and that was loads of fun, so hopefully this party will be just as successful. We haven’t thrown a party this big since his 1st birthday, so it’s a big deal. Add to that I am not the most domesticated woman in the world and you could say I am more than a little stressed.

This weekend we’re planning on getting outside and doing a bit of spring cleaning around the yard. Raking up old leaves, taking the cover off the pool, washing the patio furniture and scrubbing down the deck is all on our massive todo list. I hope you all enjoy a wonderful weekend and take the opportunity to do something, one little thing you truly enjoy. But if you can’t tear yourself away from the computer be sure to check out these articles from some of the great blogs we follow.

7 Ways to Make Regret-Free Decisions and Overcome Insecurity – Someday Syndrome

Do you ever waver over decisions and or feel insecure about your actions? Perhaps it’s because you don’t have a passionate vision of the future. If your future is murky or you’re not sure the future you have in mind is the right one for you, every decision you make will cause you anguish. You have nothing against which to measure progress and you have no idea if your decisions are correct or not. Indecisiveness leads you to regret every decision you make. The regret then leads to insecurity. Because you can’t trust your inner voice, you start looking for outside approval. You let the opinions of others sway you until you don’t know what’s going on inside your head and your heart.

8 Principles for a Zen Marriage – Simple Marriage

For over a year now I have been a Zen Habits follower. In fact I have even used some of Leo’s work on Simple Marriage. Recently Leo wrote a post on how to live like a Zen Monk. Which got me thinking about how a couple could create a Zen Marriage. To begin, what exactly would a Zen Marriage look like and why would anyone want to experience one?

How To Reclaim Your Childlike Passion For Life -Simple and Spiritual

In the film “Knocked Up” a man sits at a park bench watching his daughters blow bubbles. He says to the man beside him, “Why do they get so excited over bubbles. They’re just bubbles.” He sits there musing for a while, and then he adds, “I wish I could get that excited over bubbles. I wish I could get that excited about anything.” Every adult at some point has watched a child and wished that they could rediscover that explosive joy and passion that children have. That they once had.

How to Alleviate Self-Consciousness and Other People-Allergies – Raptitude

Whether it’s the rude throng of last-minute Christmas shoppers, or the drunken fratboys slithering up to you at a concert, or the old man in the restaurant booth behind you who clears his decrepit throat every forty seconds, everyone finds themselves feeling a general aversion to people now and then. For those with any level of social anxiety, there is always at least a hum of this derision in the background, sometimes a full-on shout. Even for those without it, repeated ugly experiences can inspire a familiar distaste for people that may never completely disappear. Unless, of course, the people do.

Do my words improve silence? – Quantum Learning

Silence is perfect, unformed nothingness and stillness. Only in silence is there complete tranquility and peace. Speaking both creates and destroys. I create new form out of my thoughts and in doing so I destroy the perfect silence. Every time I open my mouth to give voice to my words I disturb the quiet by creating a vibration, a ripple in the still pool of silence. I had better make sure I’m creating something of meaning!

5 Tiny Steps to Quit Being Such a Jerk – Zen Habits

I was having a talk with my son yesterday, sitting him down and talking about consideration — how to think of others, and not just yourself. It’s a key concept that makes such a difference in life that it’s one of the few things I really want to teach my children. It’s so sad because I see so many inconsiderate people around me every day — people who only care about what they want and don’t think of others, don’t see things from the perspective of other people. People who cut you off in traffic, who cut in front of you in line, who say rude things, who take your parking spot, who hurt your feelings. I try to brush these things off, but it’s unfortunate that so many people are so inconsiderate.

Stephen Covey, in his book The 8th Habit, says “the first and most demanding form of personal growth takes place in the family.” Since embarking on the journey of motherhood a little over two years ago, I completely agree with his assessment. Becoming a mother has challenged me to grow and see myself in ways I never have before. It has required an honesty about who I am and how to best care for myself that has produced some of the best fruits in my life. But they also have been some of my hardest lessons.

Sometimes I want to be more rooted and not so much moving from place to place. At other times I look for more time for writing and not so much wasted time. Or I could do with more fee earning work and less time invested in developing a peaceful future. Of course, in other periods all these are turned exactly in the opposite direction. There always seems to be some aspect of my life where I’m striving for balance.

All sorts of variables can put us in stressful situations. Some of them we create, others just happen. Either way, it doesn’t do us any good to get bent out of shape and full of angst when what we really need is to remain calm, rational and productive. Here are three possible stressful scenarios, and ten tips to help you remain calm if you find yourself in one of them.

How do you judge success in your life? What makes you happy? I’ve been writing a lot lately about money, but the accumulation of wealth can be a false yardstick for success. As we’ve seen in our economy, money comes and goes. True happiness or joy in life needs to be built on a more solid foundation.

So, there you are in the grocery store with the kids, one is asking for everything he sees, and the other is crying for reasons unknown to you. Has this ever happened to you? Well, I’ll say, it has for me on more than one occasion. Obviously, we can’t always predict what our kids moods will be on any specific day or in any particular situation. This being the case, I figured out that the best thing to do on shopping days is to be as prepared as possible before I ever leave the house.

A Guide for the Overwhelmed - Think Simple Now

Have you ever found yourself in a scenario where you had multiple deadlines, a long list of unfinished tasks, past due bills coming in the mail because you had forgotten to pay them, a rented copy of The Office Season 4 DVD that was due 9 days ago, and family, friends, and bosses asking you to do more? What can we do to gain back control of these chaotic and stressful situations?

How To Get What You Want In Life - Present Outlook

I thought carefully about posting an article with a title like this. Is it really that easy? Can you really sum up how to get what you want in life in a blog post? Surely it’s way more complex than that?

But the more I thought about it the more I realised that it really is this simple. The reason it seems difficult is because we are all so hopeless at following through on things. We want everything but aren’t prepared to really get stuck in and get our hands dirty trying to get it. We don’t have the self-discipline to do what needs to be done (at least that’s how it is from my end!).

If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, you don’t have significant flexibility in changing your career or business. Even if you wanted to make a switch, you’re completely dependent on your current income streams to support you. With an emergency fund, you have an entire year to transition from one work direction to another.

They have discovered a new malady to avoid: saver’s remorse. It’s just what it sounds like: that sad feeling you get with money in your pocket that you could have spent in some enjoyable way but, in a moment of weakness, chose to save.

“Everywhere you look, things are moving at a fast pace. Hurry up is a common phrase. When I want something, I want it right now. ‘What? You mean I have to wait 45 seconds for the book I just bought to download? Where’d I put the number for my Internet provider, I need a faster connection!’

The speed of life takes its toll on marriage and family as well. If your day is spent racing around from one thing to the next, it’s too easy to continue this pace when you arrive home each day.”

“Regular note-taking is one of the most productive habits a person can practice. The ability to take notes online and access them anytime, from any location is priceless. Over the last few years, I have personally tested nearly 100 different ways to do this. Some of these note-taking systems are worth mentioning, and some are worth forgetting.”

“This is the last post in the series on personal creeds, where we will look at real-life personal creeds of real-life individuals. Previous posts addressed the importance of having a personal creed, what is a personal creed, and how to write a personal creed.”

“I’m not a big fan of ‘dieting’ — a word that conjures up images of hunger and chewing on celery or doing some kind of fad diet — but I do believe in trying to eat a healthier diet.

“Humans excel at recognizing faces but neuroscience can’t say how we accomplish it. Now, in an effort to explain our success in this area, researchers are taking a closer look at how and why we fail at face recognition. Specifically, our impaired ability to recognize faces in photographic negatives. The study, appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that a large part of the answer might lie in the brain’s reliance on a certain kind of image feature.”
