Dream Big And Put It Out There
I saw a message on twitter recently about a guy who is campaigning to have a ”Beer with Branson“. While some people may roll their eyes and think “ya, as if”, I think it’s great, admirable really.
“Bugsy” is obviously a big fan of Sir Richard Branson and has a dream to sit and chat and pick his brain for a while. You never know unless you try, right?
I have a few big dreams of my own. Until now I haven’t been particularly vocal about them. I suppose I had always worried about what people would think or what they would say. Then I come back to the saying that’s had the biggest impact on my life:
“You’d worry less about what people thought of you if you knew how little they did.”
So here are my big dreams. I’m just going to put them out there, continue to focus on the good and taking advantage of any opportunity that presents itself.
1. I will work with Leo from Zen Habits fame. - This one has actually happened. One day on the way home I said to Gwynn “one day I’ll work with Leo.” It’s true. A few months later there I was chatting with Leo on Skype. It was eerie (not the conversation with Leo) the fact that what I wanted actually came to be.
2. I will be interviewed by Oprah. Granted her show is ending in a year or so but I’m still putting it out there. Being able to pick her brain would be amazing. I would also love the opportunity to share my passion for deliberate, simple living with such a wonderful and large audience.
3. I will make a positive impact on people’s lives through what I say as well as what I do. From the feedback I’m getting, this is already happening as well. I find it hard to believe since I don’t feel I’ve given all that I’m capable of. So let’s just say you ain’t seen nothing yet.
4. I will be successful in earning a living from online ventures. This one is a bit tougher to get my head around. I’m not at all comfortable with marketing and sales pitches. And I’m equally uncomforted by the thought of coming across as desperate or only wanting to sell something. That’s really not who I am. So this is something I definitely need to work at and become comfortable doing if I’m to make a go of this one.
5. I will publish a book of practical and simple ways to take ownership and enjoy your life. Again, not something I have a lot of experience with. The largest writing project I’ve ever worked on was my doctoral thesis and once I submitted that I vowed never to write again … and yet here we are.
So those are five biggies that I’m willing to share today. I may regret doing this but I don’t think so. Maybe someone reading this will give me a chance or help me achieve one of these rather lofty dreams. As I said to Gwynn the other day “2010 is THE year. It just feels right. And NO opportunity will go unopportunized*.”
There are no time lines attached to any of these since there’s no telling when the opportunity will present itself. But I will achieve these things, one way or another, just as “Bugsy” will be sipping a pint with Sir Richard Branson some time this year.
What are your big dreams? Put it out there and see what happens … you never know who’s reading or listening!
*And yes I’m well aware that unopportunized is not even close to a word

You are already definitely having a positive effect on people! Me, for instance!
It is eerie how similar my big dreams are. I better think of a few more big dreams to add. Have a good Wednesday!
Thanks for sharing Sherri. If you ask me, your dreams are not that far away from your hands, probably you just need to go and grab them.
Think about it, if you have not done what you are capable of yet, imagine what would happen when you do. Only wonderful things can happen then!

Sherri, I think it’s awesome that you achieved one of your intended biggies already, with your Leo collaboration. On top of that, you’re definitely accomplishing #3, and I think #5 will naturally follow from that.
As for Oprah… she’ll probably have some OTHER show or big thing on her own. I don’t see her retiring to her home in Hawaii in total obscurity. You’ve still got a shot at that. And the online money thing, well… I feel your pain on that one. I would LOVE to figure that one out too… we’ll get there.

Sherri, why don’t you monetize your site? You don’t see paper magazines without advertising! You have here what I consider an online magazine. You write regular high quality articles illustrated with wonderful photos. Just because you are doing something you love doesn’t mean you have to give it away totally free! There are so many people that think if you are doing something that benefits others it should be free. Doctors benefit others, and they sure aren’t free!
We artists have long been disturbed that people think because we are doing something we love we should sell it cheaply or give it for free. I can only think that idea came from some poor slob that hates his job and thinks that paid work should only be something that makes you miserable.
So! Monetize your blog! Put up a donate button! I was looking for one some time back, and I meant to ask you about it. Look for affiliates, too! Write an eBook, and charge us for it! We are grown-ups! We know we need to pay for quality, even if it is just buying from ads on your site. I buy from Amazon. I would certainly love to click on Amazon from your site, so you benefit!
Hi Sherri, here you have been sharing a lot about your life and then you hesitate to share something YOU regard as intimate, your dearest dreams because of how your ego, little voice thinks how we will perceive it. Thanks for your honesty and going beyond that. Only in the experience you get to find out how putting it out there will work, so good for you. AND you will have some work to do about exchanging energy ie asking money for your efforts.
Another weird distorted concept, we have no idea about how to do it authentically and honestly, because how much honest examples do we have? However you can only learn from your experiences and only change how you do things by doing them differently, so Sherri go for it and as a consolation I am learning too.

I also have big dreams. What I like to do is giving the first step. I enjoy that: doing something little to be a bit closer, and keep like that.
I will be there someday.

Wow I love how you thing BIG! Congrats on Leo and I’m sure the rest will flow right into your life like that one did.
I agree with Mary you should monetize your blog. Why not? What are you waiting for?
It sounds like you’re off to an awesome start and I’m sure you’ll rock the rest of 2010!

I admire your ambition and your drive to achieve your big 5 dream list Sherri!
Bravo!
Like what Lisis said, I agree that you are well on your way to achieving your other dreams.
It all starts by you thinking about them and talking about them.
Next step is to take action which I am sure you are intending to do
Keep going and never stop Sherri, I’m rootin for yah

Sherri,
Well done, and thank you! I found your link to my Beer With Branson project after looking at my Google Analytics. He hasn’t called yet, but soon I hope
And well… I think Richard Branson has always set his dreams high too. He received a lot of grief when he threw out the idea that he was going to start an airline. And now he’s taking reservations to fly people into space.
Dreaming big is the only way to go.
Make it happen
Thank you all so much for your kind words and encouragement. It gives me a lot of hope that I’ll realize these dreams a lot sooner than I initially thought.
Keeping these at the forefront of my mind, putting my head down and getting it done is what will work.
I hope you all go after your big dreams this year and make little steps each day to get there. As always if there’s anything I can do to help you along the way please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email.
Thanks again everyone!
Thanks Sherri! Love the post and the quote, hope you don’t mind I mentioned it and you on my post.
