What’s On Your Good Habits List?
I read a great article at Self Help Daily called 10 habits we should all adopt – starting tomorrow. Joi (pronounced Joy), doesn’t focus on how to drop bad habits to make way for the good, instead she takes the approach that filling our lives with good habits will simply leave no room for the bad. She likens it to healthy eating following the logic that if you can load your plate with healthy food you’ll have no room for the unhealthy choices.
So back to the habits, if you fill your life with so many good habits you’ll essentially squeeze out the bad ones with relatively little effort.
Joi comes up with a great list of habits to inspire people and get you thinking of good habits you would like to form yourself. Of the ten she lists I would include: read more, drink more water, and get at least 30 minutes of activity each day to my list.
Some other habits I would like to form:
- Stop eating after 8 pm
- Floss my teeth daily
- Set and follow a daily routine
- Write more
- Do not just plan
- Journal every day
- Be more grateful
- Eat more fruits and vegetables
- Meditate
- Get outside for at least 10 minutes each day
As we enter a new year give a thought to some habits you would like to form. These aren’t resolutions these are habits. Habits that you can integrate into your life, do daily No. Matter. What.
I have a project in mind for 2010 and your list will certainly come in handy. I’m still working on the details but I’ll share with you all very shortly.
So in the mean time what are 10-12 good habits you would like to adopt into your life?

Great article.
For tracking and building great habits, you may want to check out http://www.GoalsOnTrack.com, which has a built-in habits tracker, it’s also a very nicely built web app designed for tracking goals and todo lists, and supports time tracking too. It’s clear, focused, easy to navigate, worth a try.
Harry´s last blog ..Habit Tracker Launched!
1. Floss daily
2. Meditate daily.
3. Complete projects.
4. Act on my ideas.
5. Drink more water.
6. Do aerobic exercises at least 3 times a week. (I walk nearly every day.)
7. Stay focused.
8. Face challenges without self-sabotage.
9. Make art every day.
10. Write more letters.
I’m sure I have more, but those are the ones I thought of immediately.
Here are a few things I’ve started doing recently, or am currently working on adopting:
– Shutting my computer down at 8pm
– Waking up when the sunrises (I just leave my blinds open)
– Drinking water and eating a healthy breakfast before doing anything else
– Reading a few chapters of any book before touching my computer or iPhone
– Interspersing my “work” with reading, writing in my notebooks or playing piano
…I’m sure there’s lot more I should be working on, but these are the ones that stand out at the moment.

Thanks for the great post! I am doing a habits post (already written when I came across yours) on Friday, the 18th on my blog. Yours helps me to be a little more specific in my plans for 2010.
Here are mine! –
1. Drink lots of water
2. Sleep more
3. Give many compliments
4. Focus on gratitude
5. Watch the carbs
6. Cut myself some slack
7. Never leave a room empty-handed
8. Speak the truth
9. Breathe deeply
10. Listen to my body
11. Identify bits of joy as often as possible
12. Minimize the use of the words ’should’ and ‘have to’
These by Joi would definitely work for me.I am trying to focus on one thing at a time.
Great idea, Sherri.
For starters I would like to:
- Look people in the eye when they speak to me.
- Quit buying potato chips
- Cook more vegetarian meals
- Let go of my instinct to want to fix or help people and just let them vent.
- Use a set amount of cash for eating out
- Drink less alcohol
- Drink more tea
- Work out a little each day
- Snuggle the dog
- Have better, less stressful morning trying to get everyone out the door.
That was way too easy. I’ll start with 10.
Thanks for the heads up Harry I will definitely have a look.
You guys have such great lists and thank you for sharing.
A few that I would steal and add to my list are:
Act on my ideas
Stay focused
Shutting my computer down at 8 pm
Sleep more
Minimize the use of the words ’should’ and ‘have to’
Snuggle the dog
I look forward to reading your list next week Jennifer also check out Tracy’s list at the enchanted cottage, she’s done a great job as well.
Thanks for the reminder about “focusing on the good”. I was thinking about that this morning. It is interesting how we have the power to lift our moods when we focus on the good (what we are gratiful for etc) rather than the bad (what didn’t go well today, yesterday…last week!)
Focusing on establishing good habits is another extension on that thinking, thank you!
I need to add Sleep More to my list, too! I have been sleep deprived for years!
1. Live in the moment.
2. Celebrate everyday blessings.
3. Eat more fruits and veggies.
4. Forgive readily.
5. Love myself and others unconditionally.
6. Breathe deeply.
7. Think before I speak.
8. Express gratitude often.
9. Savor the beauties of nature.
10. Give myself permission to make mistakes.

Thank you for reminding us about the value and impact of having good habits.
Some habits that I would like to work on are:
- Be more patient/avoid snapping at people (especially if they didn’t have anything to do with your bad day)
- Make it a point to not have a bad day and adapt a more positive outlook on things
- Read at least one good book a month
- Spend more time catching up with family and friends
- Be more appreciative of what I have
- Stop procrastinating
- Set aside a few minutes each day to realign with myself
- Give more and help others a little every day
Well, as they say, habits are hard to break. Here’s to developing good habits that would make us live more.
P.S. Add http://budurl.com/79e2 to your good habits and get to make more, live more and give more.
