Three things I have in the back of our van are;

Wet suits so we can go for a swim any time of year.

Water bottles, always.

Big plastic ground cover. Handy when the weather is good but the ground is wet.

Those are my favorite things.

Hi Chris
I love that you have a pocket stove so you can have tea if you're stranded in a snowstorm that's fabulous! :) I think I may have to look into getting a portable picnic kit as well it sounds awesome.

Thanks for sharing!

I keep a fairly extensive emergency kit in the trunk in a plastic bin. This includes things like a rain poncho, flashlight and pocket stove (in case I ever get stranded in a snowstorm, I can at least have a cup of tea).

I keep my reusable shopping bags back there.

But the most important thing in the trunk is my portable picnic kit. It has dishes, wineglasses and utensils with a cutting board and its only about 6" x 10".

These are great you guys!

Suzanne I'm think I'm going to stash an overnight bag in the back for my boys that's a great idea.

Foxie, where exactly do you sit? ;) That's a whole lot of stuff to keep in a cool little Miata!

Ian I laughed at the bicycle that's a great plan B! :)

Chris, I love the extra garbage bags. My husband keeps a few stuffed inside a toilet paper tube. It keeps them neatly contained and it fits neatly in our glove box.

Mary, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with exercise equipment in the back! A shovel is a must in our neck of the woods you never want to be without one when/if you hit the ditch. (Touch wood it's a ditch free winter this time around).

Well, I have a truck. Right now the bed of the truck sports a shovel and a bag of trash for the dumpster.

The back seat holds my yoga mat, a diaper bag, and a blanket. That's it. :)

Thnaks for this -- it reminded me that I need to clean out my trunk. Right now, the items in my trunk include some books I haven't finished reading, some clothes I probably will not wear again, extra garbage bags -- I guess in case garbage appears in the car, and other highly useful stuff.

I don't have a car, but if I did then I'd have

1 a shovel and snow chains - just in case the weather turns bad

2 a full can of petrol (gas) - I know it may not be the safest thing to carry, but as I don't have a car I assume I'd not be in the habit of checking the fuel gauge often so I'm likely to run out.

3 a bicycle - in case I'd forgotten to fill up the petrol can.

Only three things? I usually have...

-AAA emergency kit, a Christmas gift I've never had to use, thankfully
-Jumper cables
-Haynes manual for my car (for troubleshooting)
-My autocross magnets, I have really no other logical place to keep them
-A towel and/or a rag
-The giant wrench thingie for my lug nuts (forget the technical name)
-Usually a quart of oil too, plus the regular jack and spare tire.

On any other given day, I might also have:

-Cleaning supplies, like quick detailer or wipes
-My scooter and/or backpack
-My racing helmet

Of course, contents may vary, but this is usually what I've got with me.

A huge tote bag to use at the park with balls (i.e. a full size basketball, mini football, tennis balls, baseballs, assorted small lightweight balls), sunscreen, chapstick, gum and/or hard candies, sanitizer, pen & paper, napkins and/or tissues.

An umbrella stroller (my kids are 7 and almost 5, yet they do love getting a ride now & then)

A small backpack with a change of clothes for each child because grandparents and/or an aunt has surprised me more than once with a request to have them sleepover while we were having a family party.

And a bonus 4th item, just because...

A golf umbrella (I just like that it's big, not because we golf :-)
