  1. We’ve been doing the same thing over the past few months, as we’ve known our move was coming for a while. We conveniently have a dumpster at our property {we’re moving into a new construction} so it’s made getting rid of things we can’t donate A LOT easier!

  3. I really need to get on this sort of thing. I don’t know when, but we’ll end up moving here sometime in the next year or two… And we’ve managed to fill up the house with so much stuff, even though it doesn’t seem like a whole lot! (We don’t have nearly as much as other people, but we do have quite a bit.)

I’m especially horrible about sentimental things, or a few things from old hobbies. I still have all of my Tae Kwon Do equipment, but I haven’t practiced it in nearly three years. :/

  4. I think it’s really important to think about your actual lifestyle. Many of us accumulate possessions that represent an ideal lifestyle but that we only bring out once in a blue moon, if ever.

It can be hard to get everyone in a household on board to simplify. Those “ideal life” possessions reflect our aspirations, and we hate to think we’ve spent money on things we never use, so we tell ourselves we *will* use them … someday.

Just as it’s best to “stage” your home for living, and not wait until you’re about to sell it to get it looking the way you want, it’s best to “stage” your life for simple, peaceful comforts and not accumulate things (much less cart them from home to home) just because they looked so great on the page.

  5. The sheer joy on the faces of your friends who help you move when they see how little you have is priceless and is worth every item you threw away.
The sheer joy you feel when packing only stuff you really need and want and thus making the move painless is wonderful.

Experiencing the sheer joy of traveling light is all you need to get rid of stuff forever.

  6. Thank you so much for this post! Much of our belongings are in storage right now, so when it is time to move somewhere new, I’ll try to take your advice!
