7 Little Things You Might Not Have Wanted To Know About Us
Ok so we’ve been tagged by our good friend Michael over at Love to Spare. We thought it might be a great opportunity to let you all know a little bit more about us and where we come from.
But first here are the rules:
- Link to your original tagger and list these rules in your post
- Share 7 facts about yourself in the post
- Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names and links to their blogs
- Let them know they’ve been tagged.
So without further ado here are 7 things you might not have wanted to know about us.
- Gwynn was born in South Africa and immigrated to Canada with his mom when he was 13. Gwynn still has family in South Africa and in 1996 we all went for a visit where I was able to meet some of his relatives which was great. South Africa is a beautiful country. There are so many different environments crammed into one tiny country (It’s only about 472,000 square miles). There’s desert, rain forest, mountains, and coast lines all within a few hours drive of each other. It really is an amazing place.
- Gwynn and I have been married for 12 years but together for 18. We are relatively new parents to two sons. As I write this our youngest is 5 months old and our eldest is 20 months old, so yes we’re pretty busy!
- Gwynn has had 2 piercings in his life one in his ear (which he no longer has) and one on his chest…yes Gwynn has his nipple pierced…and yes it is as gross as you are imagining it to be! In case it’s not clear…I’m not a fan of it
. Similarly I have 6; 5 on my ears and 1 in my navel and yes it HURT! - We moved to Australia for nearly 4 years in 2002. I was getting my PhD in genetics and Gwynn furthered his career as a computer programmer. Moving to a country where we didn’t know another soul was very intimidating and there were many times when we wanted to pull the plug, but in the end we stuck it out and it’s been one of our best experiences yet.
- While in Australia we took a jaunt over to New Zealand and spent 2 weeks on the South island…BEAUTIFUL! We went there primarily to do the Milford Track, coined “the finest walk in the world”, it’s a 4 day, 33.2 mile hike up over a mountain pass and back down the other side. Turns out we were really unfit, carried way too much stuff and were SPENT by the end of day 4. But we didn’t think we did too badly for a couple of Canucks from the prairies.
- I’ve only had one broken bone my whole life and it was all Gwynn’s fault. :) It was New Year’s eve and we were all outside watching the fireworks at midnight, when they were over Gwynn proceeded to tackle me and we rolled down a hill together (it’s the middle of winter so there’s a lot of snow). After that, my finger was VERY sore and I let everyone know about it. The general advice I got was to “suck it up” and “just bend it”. So I did, only to find out 2 days later that my finger was actually broken.
- In high school Gwynn had a 1974 Dodge Dart, pictured below. He and a friend did the custom paint job…all on their own (can you tell?). The only thing was, Gwynn wanted to paint it black and white like a Zebra but as it turns out his friend didn’t quite know how to do Zebra stripes. So in the end 1/2 of the car was Zebra and the other half was Cow. This little Dodge Dart was affectionately called the Zow.

So there you have it 7 things you may (or may not) have wanted to know about us. I’m going to pass this on to 7 other people and (in no particular order) they are:
- Stephen – The Rat Race Trap
- Lisa – The Well Grounded Life
- Alex – Someday Syndrome
- Amanda – Mommys Idea Book
- Marc – Mark and Angel Hack Life
- Jeff – My Super-Charged Life
- Glen – PluginID
Hope you enjoyed it!

Brilliant, the Milford Track. Fiordland is the only place in NZ that I am yet to visit. I’ve heard it’s the best though. My friend Mike is a crayfisherman in Milford sound and he loves it.

Thanks for all your comments!
@ Jay – What painting the car like a zebra/cow hybrid makes us weird?
@ Roger – definitely worth the trip to both if you ever get the chance.
@ Alex – Welcome! I’m glad you’re going to participate I can’t wait to learn a bit more about you as well!
@ Regina – I know!
@ Lisis – Yeah you learn something new everyday eh? There’s usually a whole lot more than meets the eye…and I guess we’re no different.
@ Tom – Fiordland is stunning!! The day after our trek we did a day of sea kayaking in Milford sound…I HIGHLY recommend it, and it sounds like you’d have accommodations sorted too!
Hi Sherri,
This was an amusing 7 things list! I liked every one of the items, and some were good for a laugh, like the Zow! I like the photo of two of you as well on that hiking trail. You look so happy and serene!

@ Daphne – Thanks I’m glad you liked the list and the Zow…I love that picture too. It was the start of the hike so we were all rested and ready to go, a far cry from our end of the trail photo
But it was worth every step!
@ Consolidate – Hi welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed the post. No we left Australia at the end of 2005 but it was a great adventure! Thanks for leaving a comment!
Very cool facts. First of all, good for the two of you for being together for so long. It is obvious you two works as team and that there is a lot of love. And you two must have met when you were teenagers because you both look too young to be together for 18 years!
Nadia-Happy Lotus’s last blog post..How To Go From Being a Type A(nxious) to a Type P(eaceful) Person
I agree that you both look too young to have been together for eighteen years! Not only are you both young but brilliant, too! Genetics and computer programming! Yikes!
You have had an adventurous life! I can hardly get my husband to drive somewhere to a restaurant! LOL
@ Nadia and Marry – Thanks for your kind words. Yes we met when we were quite young
We’re still having a lot of fun after all these years and there’s still a whole lot more yet that we’d like to do!
Okay, done! I’ve posted my Someday-twist version…
